What is Affordable Housing?
The Department of Housing and Urban Development states a household should pay no more than 30% of its annual income on housing. If a household pays greater than 30% it is considered to be cost burdened by its housing payments.
Why Do We Need More Affordable Rental Housing?
Demand for rental properties is increasing dramatically as families face foreclosure or are unable to acquire a home mortgage loan. In St Paul, the percentage of renter-occupied homes increased from 45.2% in 2000 to 48.7% in 2010 (USA Today, May 2011). As demand for rental units increases, housing costs begin to rise. Creating rental units that are affordable enables more households to be able to afford other necessities such as food costs, childcare, health insurance, and transportation costs.
Most individuals will be a renter at some time in their lives. Often people associate renting with young adults or elderly people. However, many renters are families that either prefer renting or are not in a position to purchase a home.
